The Faraway Fox Welcomes....a bit about me!!

Welcome – Bienvenido – Bienvenue – Willkommen – Shalom – Benvinguda

While I am putting the finishing touches to my new posts I decided I would do a very short introduction as to why I decided to start this blog, after so many years of talking about it!

The inspiration behind ‘Far Away Fox’ is based on a few things.  Firstly, my family, secondly, the dreamlike state I get into when I cook and lastly, my love of travelling and discovering new cultures.

I was born in England to English Parents but my family has origins in many far flung places – Russia, Germany, Spain, Holland, Poland and the Ukraine are the main contributors but there are other cultures which have all woven their way into my cooking.  I have also learnt my skills from my Mother, Grandmothers and even from my Grandfather’s time as a cook during WWII (he was actually a spy but during the time he wasn’t spying he was cooking!)

I am also privileged to have befriended many people from different cultures over the years, whether through trips abroad or through following my passions – Sri Lankan, Indian, Italian and Romanian etc, who, luckily for me are willing to teach me about the foods from their homelands.

I currently live in Madrid, Spain, which has introduced me to an even wider range of people than living in the beautiful Chiltern Hills of Oxfordshire would have ever afforded me. I learn something new everyday.

Lastly, when I cook, I go into a dream like state, hence the other reason for ‘Far Away’. It hits me like opium the minute those onions in the pan start to sizzle and the oven fan starts to whir.   I go into a zone where I am completely in control.  This state does not happen in any other area of my life!

So, please, enjoy my discoveries from near and far and post any tips or question I am happy to learn and help.

Thank you and happy cooking!
